UK rail maintenance company MTMS has underlined its pledge to provide support and opportunities for serving and former military personnel as part of the UK’s activities to recognise its armed forces.

The company, which is based in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, but operates across the country, took part earlier this week in a ceremony held at the University of Derby on Reserves Day and is also marking Armed Forces Day tomorrow.

MTMS advertises itself as a pro-military employer and has been awarded Silver Defence Employer Recognition status for its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, which is a nationwide pledge to acknowledge and understand the need to treat current and former members of the armed forces and their families with fairness and respect.

The company routinely seeks to give employment opportunities to ex-military personnel, gives time off for reservists to serve their country and works with local cadet groups.

Lee Hampton, the company’s head of marketing and systems, represented MTMS at the university event, which was held on Wednesday (June 21), where attendees learned about the ways in which the country’s Army, Navy and Air Force reserves play a vital role in peace time far away from the front line.

He said: “Reserves Day and Armed Forces Day have grown in importance every year and we ensure that we mark them both at MTMS as part of our appreciation of the way our armed forces work to protect our country and our interests both at home and abroad.

“We have had many military personnel come to work for us and they bring with them a wide of range of qualities from their service days that help them enormously in their work for MTMS.

“We also feel it’s our duty to give reservists the support they need to balance their careers with their service commitments, which is another reason why we attended the event at the University of Derby this week.”

MTMS currently services and maintains rolling stock and rail depot specialist equipment and carries out routine infrastructure tasks at more than a half of rail depots across the UK, serving such familiar names in mainline rail as First MTR South-Western Railway, Govia ThamesLink Railway, Arriva and Siemens.
