A Nottingham-based business is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2019 by taking its current tally of apprentices to 11.
Luxfer Gas Cylinders is the world’s largest manufacturer of high-pressure aluminium and composite gas cylinders, which are used for applications such as medical gases, alternative fuel vehicles, fire extinguishers, aerospace inflation systems, scuba diving cylinders and firefighter breathing equipment.
This year, the company will offer three more people the opportunity to develop their career with an invitation to join its unique apprenticeship programme.
The 2019 intake will join the company’s existing cohort of eight apprentices. Apprentices are enrolled on programmes as wide ranging as engineering, manufacturing and business administration.
Luxfer Gas Cylinders reviews its business every year to decide where it can offer Apprenticeships, according to Lynne Whittaker from Luxfer.
She said: “We are absolutely delighted to be showing our support for National Apprenticeship Week and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
We are very excited to be able to welcome our new apprentices and look forward to watching their careers develop.
Apprenticeships are a great path for people at any stage of their career from those starting out, to those re-entering the workforce, or those wanting to reskill or change careers.”
To mark 12 years of NAW, the theme for this year’s events is “Blaze a Trail”. And at Luxfer, the current crop of apprentices won’t have to look far to find inspiration to blaze a trail with their careers.
Jono Garton is a Project Engineer at Luxfer Gas Cylinders’ Colwick-based site. Jono started on the company’s apprenticeship programme in 2007 when he left school at the age of 16.
Jono said: “I had been turned off by classroom learning and decided I didn’t want to study A levels. I graduated from the apprenticeship in 2010 and have since gone on to more study; I now have a Higher National Certificate (HNC) Electrical and Electronic Engineering and am currently studying for a degree in BEng(Hons) Engineering Management.
“Luxfer supported me throughout this process, and it has been a huge incentive to be able to earn and learn at the same time.”
Luxfer operates facilities in the United States, the UK, France, Canada, China and India. It is estimated that there are more than 70 million Luxfer cylinders in service around the world.
