How to survive and thrive under the new Customs and EU Trade Procedures

Over the past 12 months, the VAT & Customs team in Dains have been working with clients, providing practical and commercial advice on how to deal with the BREXIT transition.

Whilst the rules appeared straightforward, as knowledge of the processes and of course the detail within the Free Trade Agreement have become apparent, the complexity to SME businesses has emerged.

We regularly hear of businesses with goods stuck at the port or indeed unable to be shipped from their place of origin.  Also, the lack of clarity and expertise in respect of commodity codes is leading to incorrect rates of VAT and duty being charged.

Themes such as Origin, Inward Processing and Customs Warehousing are now commonplace and yet the number of advisors able to confidently advise on this are relatively few.

The most encouraging news for business is that HMRC recognise the requirement for good quality advice and support and they are launching a new support grant of up to £2,000 to support with training or professional advice.

The grant may be used for advice on:

  • how to complete customs declarations
  • how to manage customs processes and use customs software and systems
  • specific import and export related aspects including VAT, excise and rules of origin

It can be used to help you get professional advice so your business can meet its customs, excise, import VAT or safety and security declaration requirements.

The VAT & Customs team at Dains have more than 40 years direct experience within HMRC and whilst the full details of the grant are being finalised, the team stand ready to support you.
