Lydia Dyson, In-patient Unit Staff Nurse at St Richard’s Hospice, with her Cavell Star Award
A nurse who cares for patients at a city-based hospice has been awarded with a prestigious prize.
Lydia Dyson, a Staff Nurse on the In-patient Unit (IPU) at St Richard’s Hospice, was presented with a Cavell Star Award for “going the extra mile” for her colleagues.
Cavell Star Awards are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who show exceptional care to patients, patients’ families, and colleagues.
Jamie Yeomans, IPU Manager, said: “Although the whole team deserves recognition for the dedication and commitment to St Richard’s, Lydia has really gone the extra mile recently to support her colleagues.
“She has played her part to ensure our patients continue to receive the outstanding care we’re renowned for, even through challenging times.”
Miss Dyson has been with the St Richard’s IPU team for nearly three years, following her time as a student nurse at the hospice.
“It was the loveliest surprise to be recognised as a Cavell Star winner,” said Miss Dyson.
“I was extremely flattered to be recognised for supporting my colleagues, but I cannot take all the credit. Every single member of the In-patient Unit is a star!
“Everyone goes above and beyond to support each other every day. We look after each other like family.
“I am constantly in awe of the kindness, compassion and dedication shown by my colleagues, I feel very lucky to be surrounded by such special people.”
The team on the hospice’s IPU provide 24-hour care tailored to each person’s needs. Patients and families are cared for by a team of health professionals, led by the Medical Director and IPU Manager.

St Richard’s Hospice cares for adults with a serious progressive illness, improving their quality of life from diagnosis, during treatment and to their last days. It also supports their loved ones.
Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,100 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.
It costs £8.75m to run the hospice (20/21 audited accounts), which includes patient care and all the necessary support services.
St Richard’s is an independent charity and relies on donations and gifts in Wills for the majority of its income with the remainder funded by the NHS.
