Pupils from Sutton Bonington Primary School help William Davis Homes Site Manager Simon Smith install a hedgehog home at the eco-friendly Lime Gardens development on the edge of the village
A group of schoolchildren have taken part in a prickly project to help wildlife. Hedgehog homes are being introduced at a new eco-friendly housing development in Nottinghamshire.
Pupils at Sutton Bonington Primary School have visited William Davis Homes’ Lime Gardens development on the edge of the village to help install one of a number of the hedgehog homes there.
Lime Gardens has a strong emphasis on the environment. Hedgehog highways are being established to help the animals move around the development, so their routes are not hindered by fences or walls. As part of these ‘highways’ the hedgehog nests will give the animals shelter.
The headteacher of the primary school, Paul Allen, said the visit was a great experience for the children to learn more about wildlife:
“The pupils really enjoyed their visit to Lime Gardens to help William Davis Homes install one of the hedgehog homes,” said Mr Allen. “They all learned a lot and asked interesting questions.”
The children signed their names on the lid of the hedgehog home and were shown around part of the Lime Gardens development by William Davis Homes health and safety advisor Diane Gibson and the site manager, Simon Smith.
Simon Smith said: “We were delighted to welcome the youngsters to Lime Gardens and help them learn about how we can all help wildlife while also providing much needed new housing. These hedgehog homes are just one part of the environmental benefits we are committed to providing.”
Lime Gardens includes a high proportion of open space (four acres) including a network of paths through a biodiversity park, a ‘village green’ with boardwalk and pond, an equipped children’s play area and a community orchard. More than 200 trees have been planted, alongside 1,200m of new hedgerow.
