A West Midlands finance director has raised almost £9000 for motor neurone disease research after completing 52 marathons this year.
Robin Mawby, the UK finance director for national commercial property and investment company LCP, part of M Core, set himself the challenge of running 52 marathons in January, shortly after his 52nd birthday.
By last week, he had completed his 52nd after running three marathons as part of the November Nightmare in Telford earlier this month. His 11-month challenge included two 50-mile ultra marathons, running back-to-back marathons eight times and running marathons on three successive days.
He has already raised £8,985 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, surpassing his target to £7,777 – inspired by the number 7 shirt that former Leeds Rhinos rugby player Rob Burrow, who has MND, wore.
“I’m overwhelmed by the amount I’ve raised and thank everyone who has donated in support of my challenge,” said Robin, who has run more than 1,460 miles for the challenge.
“There’s no doubt it has been the most difficult challenge I have ever set myself, and it’s been incredibly difficult sometimes to keep going, but somehow I have got up and put on my trainers and started running because I know every pound will make a real difference to the charity. I am looking forward to a rest next year although there is another goal in sight.”
Robin, who lives in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, was inspired to raise money after seeing the efforts of player Kevin Sinfield. The former professional rugby league has raised more than £9 million for MND charities. He was also touched by the story of Doddie Weir, who died from MND last year.
