Family fencing business secures penguins

Sidney Pope, age 7, Bonnie Pope, Sara Matthews, Lawson Pope and Tamie Clifford celebrate the Gates, Railings and Fencing Ltd penguin sponsorship

A family-run manufacturer and installer of automated gates, security fencing and ornamental railings and fencing has secured a couple of penguins after buying an elephant in 2021.

Gates Railings and Fencing Limited is joining the great Waddle of Worcester by sponsoring an adult and baby penguin. Two of eighty sculptures which will brighten city streets and public spaces, the large penguins will later be sold at auction to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

The midlands-based company’s penguin chick will be designed and decorated by children from a county primary school.

Lawson Pope, Managing Director of Gates Railings and Fencing Limited, said: “We loved the elephant trail in 2021 and were lucky to secure a sculpture at auction which not only helped the hospice but makes us smile every day.

“Becoming a penguin sponsor allows us to be involved in the next trail from the very beginning and to choose a design that will be brought to life out on the streets of Worcester. It also means we can help a local primary school play a part, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.”

The trail begins on Monday, 22 July and runs for eight weeks until Sunday, 15 September 2024.

Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager for St Richard’s Hospice, said: “It’s so lovely to welcome the Gates Railings and Fencing team to the waddle.  We really appreciate their fabulous ongoing support as a sculpture owner and now a sponsor.

“With more than three quarters of our funding coming from supporters, our care simply wouldn’t be possible without our fantastic local community by our sides.”
