A volunteering visit to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home could become a regular event for staff at a leading veterinary hospital in London.

Team members from Linnaeus-owned London Veterinary Specialists (LVS), in Belsize Park, teamed up with colleagues from parent company Mars Petcare for a day of volunteering at the renowned rescue centre.

LVS hospital director Emma Laws said it was an “incredibly rewarding” day for her and fellow LVS volunteers, registered veterinary nurse Scarlett Dean and patient care assistant Holly Hassan.

Emma said: “We were initially inspired by our colleagues in Mars Petcare who have a longstanding partnership with Battersea and reached out to see if we would like to go and help out there for a day.

“We had a guided tour and were amazed at both the size and the incredible facilities Battersea has to offer including a rehabilitation centre with hydrotherapy pool and treadmill and on-site veterinary centre.

“This was followed by a day of cleaning eight of the outdoor paddocks where the dogs go for exercise and training. It was hard work but we made sure they were left sparkling clean.

“We also got a chance to meet a lovely greyhound called Tyson, who was looking for a loving home, and had a great time giving him plenty of cuddles and throwing a tennis ball for him to catch.

“I’m sure if we didn’t already have pets, one of us would definitely have taken him home!

“It was an incredibly rewarding experience, knowing we were freeing up the Battersea staff to continue their impressive care and training programmes to help the animals move on to a loving and perfectly matched home as soon as possible.

“Battersea’s ethos to help any dog or cat in need shines through in everything they do and this also resonates strongly with our own purpose at London Vet Specialists of making a better world for pets.

“That’s why we are now hoping to make volunteering at Battersea a regular event for the London Vet Specialists team.

“If anyone is thinking of adopting a dog or cat then remember to consider Battersea as you may just find your animal soulmate. In Battersea’s own words – if you want a unique, loving pet there’s only one breed for you, rescue!”

LVS is a multidisciplinary veterinary referral facility which offers expert care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, ophthalmology and soft tissue surgery.
