Cambridgeshire vets give Essex dog new lease of life after bladder stones misery

Rip is now pain-free from bladder stones thanks to DWR Veterinary Specialists

A much-loved dog suffering from ongoing bladder stones is now pain-free thanks to a leading Cambridgeshire animal hospital.

Eleven-year-old Rip had previously undergone multiple surgical procedures to try to cure him but nothing had worked until he was referred to Linnaeus-owned DWR Veterinary Specialists in Six Mile Bottom.

It was here that specialists in internal medicine, along with assistance from the dedicated internal nursing team, introduced a much less invasive way to keep Rip’s stones at bay using a technique called voiding urohydropulsion, ensuring he is left pain free after every visit.

Simon Tappin, Clinical Director and internal medicine specialist at DWR Veterinary Specialists said: “Voiding urohydropulsion is a fast procedure, done under sedation or quick anaesthesia and the patient can go home after a few hours on the same day.

“Rip goes home feeling so much better and is now enjoying holidays on the beach with his delighted owners who previously hated seeing him in such discomfort.”

Voiding urohydropulsion fills the urinary bladder with saline water and then expresses the bladder. The amount of fluid causes pressure helping to void the little stones in a non-invasive way.

Regular close monitoring is also very important as it detects any small stones before they get too big for this technique to be possible.

Rip visits DWR Veterinary Specialists every three to four months and has a focal scan of his bladder to check for the presence of bladder stones. If there are any stones, then they are removed using a much less invasive technique.

Rip’s relieved owner, Kim Hartman from Epping in Essex, said: “Rip is like our child and we have seen him go through so much.

“He is such a happy little chap now and this technique, together with the regular monitoring, means he isn’t in continual discomfort or recovering from operations.”

Simon from DWR Veterinary Specialists added: “We couldn’t be happier for Rip, who no longer has to suffer from his bladder stones, or from multiple surgeries to try and remove them.”
