Acclaimed painter to unveil collection celebrating Birmingham city life at the ICC

Acclaimed painter and illustrator, Sam Hencher, will make an appearance at a Birmingham gallery this week to unveil his newest collection, Street Life, which captures some of the city’s most recognisable scenes.

The artist will be at Castle Fine Art at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on Friday from 6pm until 9pm, giving art fans the opportunity to learn about the ideas and processes behind his work.

Street Life takes viewers on a journey around Birmingham, offering a new perspective of the city through watercolours and oil paintings. From the unmistakable skyline to iconic waterways, the collection captures Birmingham through classical compositions delivered with modern application, and sees the artist use light to create atmosphere.

After studying at the elite Florence Academy of Art, Sam Hencher enjoyed a successful career as a visual effects artist, creating Grammy award-winning music videos and directing commercials around the world. Whilst he had always enjoyed painting as a hobby, it was only when he became a finalist in the Sky Arts ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’ competition that he decided to pursue a professional art career.

Speaking ahead of his appearance in Birmingham, Sam Hencher said: “My aim is to convey a feeling or emotion that the viewer can relate to without worrying too much about the actual subject of the painting.

“I paint very quickly without the aid of photos as reference – using sketches made in situ and memory to achieve a looser, less laboured effect.”

Beth McCarthy-Boyce, Gallery Director at Castle Fine Art, ICC, said: “We are very excited to welcome Sam to our gallery to share his talent with the people of Birmingham. He has managed to turn every day city scenes that we are all familiar with into a beautiful body of work that I’m sure will be very popular with collectors.”
