A plea for UK consumers to support black-owned businesses

Grace Trowbridge

A Hampshire entrepreneur and mum of 2 is on a mission to support black-owned independent UK businesses by launching an online marketplace during lockdown.

Grace Trowbridge, 35, a former sales and marketing manager, founded Simply Noir to make shopping with black-owned businesses more accessible and convenient.

Consumers can purchase directly from black-owned businesses through the marketplace website. Grace said: “I have always believed that black-owned businesses are underrepresented in the mainstream, and the national focus as a result of the BLM movement further highlighted the inequality that black-owned businesses face.

We hope that Simply Noir will bridge that gap whilst allowing consumers to shop more consciously.”

The website combines a comprehensive list of independent businesses as well as a support network for them. The site and the community that Simply Noir are creating will be of tremendous value for black small business owners.

The Simply Noir website has been carefully curated and shows an abundance of sustainable and ethical products from their talented vendors, Simply Noir also offers a business support network. Grace said “we want to see our vendors succeed. Not only is it important to be part of the change, but I feel I owe it to my children to make a positive contribution in bringing about that”
